Athlytic vs Axon

Both read your Apple Watch and turn it into a recovery picture. Athlytic vs Axon comes down to one trade: Athlytic charges for coaching targets and a wider device footprint; Axon is free and stays on your iPhone and Watch.

Quick answer. Athlytic ($4.99/month or $29.99/year Pro) gives you Recovery and Exertion scores plus three coaching targets — Target Exertion, Target Sleep, Target Bed Time — and runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Vision Pro and Mac. Axon is free, computes four scores (Sleep, Recovery, Strain, Readiness) plus a Fit Age reading, scores everything on-device, and is iPhone-plus-Watch only. If you want a coach that tells you a bedtime and an exertion ceiling to hit, Athlytic does that and Axon doesn't. If you want the scores for free with nothing to subscribe to, Axon is the pick.

What each app actually computes

Athlytic's core numbers are Recovery and Exertion, built from 24/7 monitoring of HRV, resting heart rate, SpO2, respiratory rate and wrist temperature. On top of those readings it layers three coaching targets: Target Exertion (how hard to push today), Target Sleep, and Target Bed Time.

Axon computes four separate daily scores — Sleep, Recovery, Strain, and Readiness — and a fifth reading, Fit Age, derived from cardio fitness trend. Readiness is built as a live, draining "bio-recharge" arc: an overnight anchor weighted 40% from Sleep plus Recovery and activity balance, then spent down through the day by strain and topped back up by rest or naps. Recovery itself blends HRV and resting heart rate against your own 30-day baseline with sleep quality, respiratory rate and blood oxygen as smaller, deviation-gated contributors — a normal reading on those last two costs you nothing. Axon does not issue a target number to hit; it shows you where you stand and lets you decide what to do with it.

Price

Athlytic's Pro tier is $4.99/month or $29.99/year. Axon is free — no subscription, no trial, no in-app purchase currently live. Axon's code contains a dormant premium tier, but it is switched off; nothing in the app is paywalled today.

Coaching: Athlytic's real advantage

This is the category where Athlytic is genuinely ahead, and it's worth saying plainly. Target Exertion, Target Sleep and Target Bed Time turn a reading into an instruction — a specific number or window to aim for tonight and tomorrow. Axon doesn't do this. It will tell you your Readiness is 58 and show you why (the sleep, recovery and activity-balance components behind it), but it stops at the number. If what you want from a recovery app is "tell me what to do," Athlytic's coaching layer is the feature Axon does not have.

Platforms

Athlytic (version 26.6.0 at the time of writing) runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro and Mac. Axon is iPhone with an Apple Watch — no iPad, Mac or Vision Pro app — but adds Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets and a Watch face complication so your score is visible without opening the app. If you split your time across an iPad or a Mac and want your recovery numbers there too, Athlytic covers ground Axon doesn't touch.

Privacy and on-device scoring

Axon computes all four scores on the iPhone itself; health data is not uploaded anywhere by default, and no account is required to start using the app. We don't have verified detail on Athlytic's own data-handling architecture, so if server-side processing versus on-device computation matters to you, check Athlytic's privacy policy directly rather than taking our word for either app.

Data honesty

Axon's stated rule is "real data or nothing": when a reading is missing — say the Watch wasn't worn overnight — the app shows a dash and the reason, never a filled-in number. This is a design commitment we can speak to because it's our own app; we have no verified basis to compare it against Athlytic's handling of missing data, so we won't guess.

Who should NOT pick Axon

If you want a coach that tells you a specific bedtime or exertion ceiling rather than a score to interpret yourself, Axon will frustrate you — that's Athlytic's job, and it does it well. Same if you use an iPad, Mac or Vision Pro regularly and want your recovery data to follow you there: Axon is iPhone and Watch only. And if continuous 24/7 vital monitoring as a running dashboard (rather than a once-a-day score) is what you're after, Athlytic's feature set is built for exactly that. In all three cases, paying $4.99/month for Athlytic buys you something Axon genuinely does not offer.

FAQ

What's the core difference between Athlytic and Axon?

Athlytic pairs Recovery and Exertion scores with daily coaching targets — Target Exertion, Target Sleep and Target Bed Time — for $4.99/month or $29.99/year, and runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Vision Pro and Mac. Axon computes four scores (Sleep, Recovery, Strain, Readiness) plus Fit Age on iPhone and Apple Watch, is free with no subscription, and does not give bedtime or exertion targets.

Is Athlytic free?

Athlytic's Pro tier costs $4.99/month or $29.99/year (US App Store, September 2026). We don't have verified detail on what, if anything, is usable without Pro — check the app's own listing before you decide.

Is Axon really free with no subscription?

Yes. All four scores and Fit Age are free with no subscription and no strap. Premium features exist in the app's code but are switched off — nothing is metered or paywalled today.

Does Axon work on iPad, Mac or Vision Pro?

No. Axon is iPhone with Apple Watch only, plus Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets and a Watch complication. Athlytic supports iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Vision Pro and Mac — if you want your recovery data on a bigger screen, Athlytic is the one that gets you there.

Which app gives me a target bedtime or exertion goal?

Athlytic. Target Exertion, Target Sleep and Target Bed Time are Athlytic features with no Axon equivalent — Axon shows you four scores and lets you interpret them, it does not hand you a number to hit.

Do I need an Apple Watch for either app?

For meaningful Recovery and Readiness data, yes, for both apps. Axon needs an iPhone on iOS 17+ paired with a Series 4 or later, SE, or Ultra; SpO2 and wrist-temperature rows need a Series 6+ or 8+. Athlytic's 24/7 monitoring likewise depends on Watch sensor data.
