How to Get a Recovery Score on Apple Watch, Without WHOOP

Your Apple Watch already collects most of what a recovery score needs overnight. Here's what it measures, why Apple stops short of scoring it, and the step-by-step to turn it into a real recovery score on Apple Watch — no strap, no subscription.

Why Apple shows Vitals but (on most watches) no recovery or readiness number

Open the Vitals app on Apple Watch and you'll see each of those readings listed individually, marked typical or outside your usual range; from watchOS 27 (14 September 2026) it also shows a Recovery HRV reading against your personal baseline, but only on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 — on every earlier Watch the card appears and stays empty. Apple stops there for most owners. On 9 September 2026 Apple announced a native Readiness score that combines recent activity, vitals and sleep and updates through the day — but it requires the new Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4 with the Health Sensing System. Series 4–11, SE and earlier Ultra models do not get it, and no Apple Watch has a recovery score. For everyone on those watches, the single number that says what the dials add up to today is the layer a dedicated recovery app adds.

What a recovery score needs: a personal baseline

A recovery score only means something relative to your normal. A resting heart rate of 58 bpm is unremarkable for one person and a warning sign for another — the number only becomes informative once an app knows what's typical for you specifically. That's why every recovery-scoring app, Axon included, needs a run-up period before its numbers are meaningful, and it's worth being upfront about how long:

Recovery score on Apple Watch: step-by-step with Axon

  1. Install Axon from the App Store — it's free, with no account required to start.

What to expect in week one

Day one, Axon can already show Sleep and Strain, since those don't need a personal history to compute. Recovery and Readiness will look different: for roughly the first week, expect a "building baseline" placeholder in place of a number — that's Axon declining to invent a score rather than a bug. By the end of week one, if you've worn the Watch overnight consistently, HRV- and resting-heart-rate-driven scores should start appearing and refining night over night. Respiratory rate keeps contributing more precisely over the following weeks as its 30-day window fills in. If a night is missed — Watch not worn, or not charged — Axon shows a dash with the reason rather than carrying over a stale or fabricated number.

Can I get a recovery score on Apple Watch without buying WHOOP or Oura?

Yes. Your Apple Watch already measures the signals a recovery score needs — heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep, respiratory rate, and on newer models blood oxygen and wrist temperature. A free app like Axon reads that data through Apple Health and computes a Recovery score on your iPhone, with no extra hardware.

Why doesn't Apple Watch show a recovery score by itself?

Apple's Vitals app shows your overnight readings against your own baselines and, from watchOS 27, a Recovery HRV reading on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 only — but it does not produce a recovery score on any model. Apple's new Readiness score (announced 9 September 2026) is limited to the Series 12 and Ultra 4. Which Apple Watch models support a full recovery score?

Axon needs an iPhone on iOS 17 or later paired with an Apple Watch Series 4 or later, SE, or Ultra. Blood-oxygen readings need a Series 6 or later; wrist-temperature readings need a Series 8 or later. Without those specific sensors, the relevant row simply shows as unavailable rather than a fabricated value.
