Apple Watch Sleep Score vs a recovery score
Apple Watch Sleep Score explained: what it measures, what the five bands mean, what the Vitals app adds — and why neither one tells you whether your body has recovered.
Quick answer. The Apple Watch Sleep Score (watchOS 26) grades one thing: how you slept, scored 0–100 from duration, bedtime consistency and interruptions. As of watchOS 27, Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 also get a native readiness score (0–10, with a plain recommendation) — but every earlier Watch, Series 4 through 11, SE and Ultra 1–3, doesn't get it. No Apple Watch publishes a combined "recovery" score by that name; Vitals now shows Recovery HRV against your personal baseline as one metric (Series 12 and Ultra 4 only), not a single verdict. Axon computes its own Sleep score from the same Apple Watch data (which can read differently from Apple's, on purpose), plus Recovery and Readiness scores that work on any Apple Watch Series 4 and later — a complement to Apple's Sleep Score, not a replacement for it.
How the Apple Watch Sleep Score works
Introduced in watchOS 26, the Apple Watch Sleep Score grades each night out of 100 using three components:

Sleep Score is a software feature tied to watchOS 26, not to the newest hardware — it runs on any Apple Watch that can update to watchOS 26 (Series 6 and later, SE 2nd generation and later, and Ultra), not only the current-generation Series 11 or Ultra 3.
What the Vitals app shows
Alongside Sleep Score, Apple's Vitals app displays your overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen (on supported models) and sleep duration. It establishes a typical range for each metric from your own history and compares each night's readings against that range — it will notify you when multiple metrics fall outside your typical range at once, with context on possible causes like medication, altitude change or illness. As of watchOS 27, Vitals also includes Recovery HRV, analyzed against your personal baseline — on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 only; older models show the card with no data — alongside its existing overnight metrics, plus Training Load (watchOS 11 and later), a separate view of how your recent workout intensity has been trending.
What neither one tells you — unless you have the newest Watch
For most Apple Watch owners, Sleep Score tells you how last night went and Vitals tells you which individual overnight numbers were unusual — neither combines them into a single, actionable call. watchOS 27 closes part of that gap on new hardware only: Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 get a native readiness feature that analyzes recent activity, vitals and Sleep Score together and returns one daily 0–10 number with a plain recommendation — Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. Series 4 through 11, SE, and every earlier Ultra don't get it, and keep only Sleep Score and Vitals. For everyone on an earlier Watch, that synthesis is exactly the gap third-party apps, Axon included, exist to fill.
How a recovery score differs from a sleep score
A recovery or readiness score starts from a different question. Instead of asking "how did I sleep," it asks "how ready is my body for today," and it answers that using signals a sleep score doesn't touch: heart rate variability and resting heart rate, both compared against your own recent baseline rather than scored on an absolute scale. A great night's sleep can still sit alongside a suppressed HRV reading — from training load, stress, illness, or alcohol — and a genuine recovery score will reflect that, where a sleep-only score can't. Where Axon fits
Axon is built to sit alongside Apple's own tools, not replace them. It reads the same on-device HealthKit data — sleep stages, heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, blood oxygen, wrist temperature — and computes a Recovery score and a live Readiness score, from HRV and resting heart rate against your own 30-day baseline, your sleep, and your recent training load. Sleep Score isn't tied to the newest hardware. It's a watchOS 26 software feature, so any Apple Watch that can run watchOS 26 gets it — Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and Ultra models, paired with an iPhone 11 or later on iOS 26. You don't need a Series 11 or Ultra 3.
Why does Axon's sleep score differ from Apple's?
Because the two scores weigh different things. Apple's Sleep Score is built from duration (up to 50 points), bedtime consistency (up to 30) and interruptions (up to 20). Axon's Sleep score is computed separately, from the same HealthKit data, using five weighted components: duration, efficiency, deep sleep, REM sleep and consistency. Different inputs and different math can legitimately produce different numbers for the same night — both are reading the same underlying data, just scoring different aspects of it.
Does Apple Watch have a recovery score?
Not a "recovery" score by that name — but as of watchOS 27, Apple does have a native readiness score, exclusive to Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. It's a 0–10 daily number with a plain recommendation (Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It), built from recent activity, vitals and Sleep Score. Every earlier Watch — Series 4 through 11, SE and Ultra 1–3 — doesn't get it; Vitals on those Watches shows Recovery HRV against your baseline as one metric among several, not a combined score. Do I need to wear the Watch overnight?
Yes, for both. Apple's Sleep Score and Vitals readings, and Axon's Sleep, Recovery and Readiness scores, all depend on overnight Apple Watch data — heart rate, HRV, movement and, where supported, blood oxygen and wrist temperature. Without overnight wear, Apple has nothing to score and Axon shows an honest "—" rather than a guessed number.
